It’s Asthma Week (1-7 September 2019) and with 1 in 9 Australians suffering from Asthma, this year’s theme of Asthma in Disguise looks at the different ways that Asthma can present and be mistaken as.
The House Dust Mite is one of the most common Asthma triggers but when triggered, Asthma can often present similar to Hayfever symptoms and can easily be confused and then mistreated.
The House Dust Mite enjoys living and breeding in spaces such as our mattresses, lounges, carpets and curtains – all things that we live and interact with daily. A regular mattress can have up to 10 million dust mites living in it after 5 years, and if you’re an Asthma sufferer that’s a lot of triggers to be sleeping with every night!
If you’re waking up with red itchy eyes, sniffly or blocked nose, scratchy and tight throat – this could definitely be your asthma in disguise.
80% of Australians that have Asthma will also suffer from Hayfever so distinguishing the difference is very important to maintaining your best possible health through Spring.
Common Hayfever symptoms can include any of the following:
- Itchy, runny or blocked nose
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Always feeling like you have a head cold
- Blocked nose
- Throat clearing or coughing to clear the throat
- Mouth breathing
Are you waking up with any of the above symptoms? If so, the House Dust Mite could be to blame!
